High River Levels and 2011 Handbook

The Connecticut River is still too fast for safe rowing, so stay on the West River for now (but watch for snags). RowBOC has made three racks and some other space available to Vermont Academy for three weeks. If you are around when they are there, there’s a chance you might be able to  join them.

Carolyn has been a great help in compiling a list of rowers and when we are available. If you have not given her your times, please drop her a line to add you to the list.

The 2011 RowBOC Handbook is here. All members are required to read it. Please take some time with the protocol section as a refresher. If you see anything there that is confusing or incorrect please let me know, this is a document that we can all contribute to.

“Check it Out Day” is in May from 10-12 pm. Tim will be on hand to talk about the sport to anyone interested in learning more before they commit to a clinic. Invite your friends, they will be able to get in and out and maybe try some strokes.

Miniclinic for Sculling Tonight

Tim started off the sculling half of the clinic last Thursday afternoon and supervised the launching of all three club singles and two doubles. His dockside instruction included a demonstration of proper sculling technique, plus a reminder that every rower should check their equipment, such as footstretchers, seats, and handle heights, before they launch.

Tonight (Monday, June 21), I’ll be going over some of those same lessons again when RowBOC hosts a junior sculling class. The session will run from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, including warm ups and stretching. A handful of people have committed, but there is still room for a few more. RowBOC can accommodate seven scullers in the club boats. Please RSVP to Anne if you’re interested.

The session costs $20 for RowBOC members and $35 for non-members.

June Novice Clinic

RowBOC is excited to see so many new novice rowers!

Due to the overwhelming success of the first clinic in May, the club decided to schedule a second novice clinic in June.

The June clinic will consist of 10 lessons with a mix of sculling and sweep rowing. You must be able to attend at least eight of the clinic dates, including the first two sessions. The  clinics will be at RowBOC boathouse in Brattleboro (near the Marina restaurant), with one or two sessions at the Putney Rowing Club. Tim Whitney and Rachael Hanley are the clinic coaches.

Clinics will cover the following: sculling (each rower has two oars) and sweep (each rower has one oar) in fours, quads, doubles, and singles. The clinic fee is $150 per person. The June session is limited to 10 people and is being offered on a first-come, first-served basis. We regret that we cannot hold a spot in clinic without payment.

If you are interested in participating, please review the dates below and send your BOC 2010 clinic application, PRC waiver, and payment to RowBOC.  The clinic is open to high school age and adult participants.

Learn to Row: Last Sweep

Coach Kristin reports that we’ll have our last sweep clinic in Brattleboro on Wednesday (the clinics will then continue with sculling in Putney).  The novices will once again be practicing with fours and, since this is a short practice, they’ll be heading out on the water right away.

Cox Elizabeth with:  Billy, Allan, Gary, and Steve.
Cox Rachael with:  Carrie, Amelia, Johanna, and Sarah.
Cox Peter with:  Dede, Judy, Pat, and Meredith.

Crews will be practicing the pick drill, using the square blade by pairs and then adding in the feather for the second round of pick. After practicing in pairs, crews will pick up to rowing all four on the feather. Coach Kristin reminds rowers to focus on their hand heights and on setting the boat. Boats will also be practicing drills such as sitting at the finish and rolling up to the catch to drop their oars in (without taking a stroke) by pairs and fours. Cambridge Boat Club describes this drill as “Newtons” (for Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion). Click here to see how they explain the drill.

The fours will also be practicing the pause drill by holding their positions at body over and continuing the stroke at their coxswain’s command.

The weather report is calling for overcast conditions, so we’re hoping for smooth water and nice rowing. Here’s to a good practice!
